Cosmetic Treatments to Improve Your Smile

Can my family dentist conduct cosmetic treatments to improve my smile?

Usually, family dentists are trained to carry out regular dental health and hygiene related procedures such as routine cleanings, filling cavities, and tooth extractions. However, basic cosmetic enhancements such as teeth bleaching can also be provided by most family and general dentists. However, there are skilled dentists who carry out cosmetic enhancements that go beyond teeth bleaching and they are referenced as cosmetic dentists. In order to obtain this talent, cosmetic dentists undergo additional training after graduating from dental school.

Which cosmetic dental procedure is recommended for a tooth gap?

The type of cosmetic technique to address a tooth gap would depend on the width and location of the gap. What is advised is to consult first with your family dentist who might then refer you to a cosmetic dentist. The first step would be an examination of the existing tooth gap and then prescribe the best treatment technique. In general, porcelain veneers or resin bonding can be used to reduce or close a gap between teeth.

A bonding treatment would generally require one visit to the dentist’s office. The gap is closed by the application of a resin bonding material blended to match the color of the teeth. However, this technique can present a less permanent solution compared to veneers because the former can tend to chip and discolor faster. Veneers are generally fashioned out of porcelain, and therefore, they are more durable and easier to match with the natural tooth color. A veneer treatment would require from two up to four visits to the dentist’s because the treatment requires a customized approach. The dentist would prepare the teeth that need the treatment and then proceed to create an impression. This would be sent to a dental technician with instructions for matching tooth color in order to create the veneer. During the second visit, the prepared veneer would be fitted for comfort, color match, and fit. If adjustments are required then the patient will need to come for a third time, or if the veneers were ready, the dentist would fix them to close the gap using a dental adhesive.
