Did you know that millions of people suffer from gum disease? This very common condition sadly goes undetected in some sufferers because of the initially mild symptoms. The majority of patients showing early signs of gum disease may not be aware of how serious it can become and others that do know of its possible consequences live with the ‘it won’t happen to me’ mentality. However, the danger presented by gum disease is very real, as you will learn through this article.
What is gum disease?
It’s an infection of the tissues of the mouth starting with the gums, by harmful bacteria. The bacteria can grow from strength to strength and attack even the bone.
What are the Early Signs of Gum Disease?
Swelling and redness of the gums are the first signs. You may feel discomfort or pain when you brush. Your toothbrush may draw blood occasionally. Your dentist can tell you if you are suffering from gum disease or some other condition. It’s important to diagnose gum disease early to have a better chance to fight it.
How does it occur?
When a tooth becomes decayed, a dental cavity is the result. This is nothing to stress over- your dentist can promptly treat you with a filling. However, if you were to neglect your daily oral care routine and if food debris accumulated in your mouth, leading to unchecked growth of plaque building bacteria, you may be in for a tough time. Plaque is loaded with bacteria that break down foodstuff into acids, which mix with the saliva. Plaque deposits on the enamel need to be removed on a daily basis, through brushing, flossing, and rinsing. If neglected, this plaque will become tartar, a much harder substance that cannot be brushed off teeth. Only a dentist’s tools can scrape it away.
